When a moon is birthed from a planet, what are the chances that it will fall into orbit around said planet? Does this somehow happen more-or-less regardless of the relative sizes of planet and moon, and regardless of the velocity of the impact? Or is it (as I suspect) much harder to throw two big rocks together in a vacuum and get a relatively stable system? Do they wobble back and forth a bit like a gyroscope seeking equilibrium?

(Why yes, this is exactly how we use Facebook.)
